Rats in the Wall Descend Doom Punk on Skeletal Twins

It can be hard to start a new musical project when the band you’re popularly known for is still in action and drawing out the punks in droves. While this is likely very true of Rats in the Wall, they don’t let this hold them back while they develop their hardcore punk rock sound. Guitarist and vocalist Brad Logan doesn’t let the fame of his other band, Leftover Crack, keep him, along with the rest of Rats in the Wall, from putting together some fresh, frenzied punk to rock out to.

Rats in the Wall kicks off their portion of Skeletal Twins with bass-heavy “The Unknown,” a rockin’ hardcore punk tune with anarcho-punk leanings aimed at zero-population nihilism. The dual vocal attack of Eva Hall and Brad Logan, while coming mostly from Hall, is very well balanced amidst the dark bass playing of Mike Westcoe. Logan starts off in-your-face hardcore punk song “Sinking,” shredding on the guitar as Donny Morris drives the song forward on drums while continuing the nihilistic undertones. The frenetic energy will have you headbangin’ along. “Manufactured Desire” really shows Logan’s skills on guitar. This hardcore tune shows their feminist perspective, focusing on the concepts of beauty and objectification. Rats in the Wall closes out their side of this split EP with Battalion of Saints’ “Cops are Out.” The band busts out one helluva gloomy rendition that seems to speed up even quicker than the original.

All in all, their side of this album remarkably rocks. After giving it a listen, one would be inclined to check out more of their music and catching them live. Rats in the Wall plays Friday, April 22nd with Gilbert ska punkers The Linecutters, Tempe hardcore punks Cloak, Chandler punk rockers Poolside Sacrifice and Mesa hardcore punk rockers Condition of Existence at 51 West in Tempe.
